Building a trade expo into a commercial platform

MotorEx grew into the largest edition in its 20-plus year history, giving sponsors, traders and exhibitors a two-day environment built around purchase intent rather than passive exposure.

The Challenge

Automotive aftermarket brands have a limited trade budget and a long list of expos competing for it. The decision is rarely about passion — it is about cost of participation, quality of audience and the likelihood of leaving with commercial outcomes.

MotorEx needed to be understood by the market not as a car show with trade attached, but as a commercially efficient route to both trade buyers and spending consumers.

The Opportunity

Research across the MotorEx audience showed an event carrying both audiences at once: automotive professionals alongside enthusiasts with substantial, repeatable spend on their vehicles.

Attendees reported an average annual spend of $8,661 on aftermarket modifications and upgrades, and entrants an average of $14,448. Just over 41% of attendees purchased directly from exhibitors on site.

The Strategy

Media Scrum positioned MotorEx on cost-efficiency and audience quality rather than crowd size alone. Trade space at MotorEx averaged $145 + GST per square metre against comparable expos frequently exceeding $450 + GST, across two days rather than three — reducing staffing cost as well as space cost.

That comparison reframed the conversation with brands from 'should we do a show' to 'which show returns the most per dollar committed'.

The Partnership

The event was structured into defined precincts so partners could align with the audience segment that matched their product: Mobil 1 Performance World for trade and product discovery, Street Machine Custom World, Aeroflow Real Street, Rare Spares Club Worlds, Car Builders 4x4 World and the JDM World presented by KOKA.

Naming and presenting partnerships were placed at the top of the structure, with Meguiar's as naming partner and LMCT+ as presenting partner.

The Activation

Rather than a perimeter of banners, the commercial precinct was built as a pathway from inspiration to purchase — product displays, demonstrations, tooling, technology and merchandise placed inside the flow of the event.

Saturday night's After Dark program — night drifting, fireworks, live music — extended dwell time and gave partners a second, festival-style window to engage the same audience.

The Result

MotorEx 2026 attracted more than 34,000 attendees across two days at Melbourne Showgrounds, the largest edition in the event's history, with crowd strength holding through rain on the Sunday.

Attention has now turned to the event's 25th anniversary in 2027, with the commercial program built off the back of a record year.

“The audience didn't just walk through the venue. They spent time with brands, explored products, asked questions and interacted with exhibitors. That level of engagement is exactly what sponsors and traders are looking for when they invest in an event platform.”
